It's great that Linux/LIRC/CommandIR can support just about anything, but you just want a quick and easy setup?  Here are the most common setup cases that works nicely everytime:

MythTV + Hauppauge Remote + CommandIR for Set-top-boxes on KnoppMyth

This is as easy as it gets:

• Plug-in CommandIR
• Install KnoppMyth (installation auto-detects CommandIR and installs a Hauppauge lircd.conf that works with KnoppMyth's out-of-box MythTV lircrc configuration)

To control your set-top-boxes:

• Use http://lircconfig.commandir.com to select your remotes and set-top boxes
• Download your new lircd.conf and ovewrite your /etc/lircd.conf
• Download your set-top box control script from http://lircconfig.commandir.com
• Configure MythTV to use your set-top control script from LIRC Config
• Restart and Enjoy!
